The year is 1969, and twelve-year-old Maggie Stone’s life is turned upside down when her mother is hospitalized after lapsing into a coma. Only-child Maggie is temporarily taken in by family friends, but eventually gets transferred to a nearby San Francisco orphanage when her mother’s condition fails to improve. And just when Maggie thinks matters couldn’t get any worse, an estranged grandfather she has never met suddenly appears on the orphanage doorstep and whisks her off to his remote Montana cattle ranch some 1200 miles away.
